The Self-Care and Mindfulness Tools Every Business Coach Keeps Within Reach

Nobody talks about this part enough. The part where running a creative business is emotionally exhausting in ways that have nothing to do with the work itself. The comparison spiral. The fear of raising your prices. The loneliness of making every decision alone. The guilt of taking a day off when there is always something more to do. I have felt all of it, and I have coached hundreds of photographers through all of it too.

After more than eighteen years in this industry, I have learned that taking care of your mental and emotional health is not a luxury you get to when the business is stable. It is foundational to building a business that is actually sustainable. As a photography business coach, I cannot show up clearly for my students if I am running on fumes. And you cannot show up fully for your clients if you are depleted and overwhelmed.

These are the tools that help me stay grounded, regulated, and clear-headed. Some of them live on my desk. Some live in my bathroom. All of them are part of how I maintain the kind of mindset that allows me to keep building, keep coaching, and keep creating over the long term.

Essential Oils and a Quality Diffuser

I have used essential oils for years, and not in a way that requires any particular belief system. The science on aromatherapy and nervous system regulation is real. Lavender for winding down. Peppermint when I need to focus. Wild orange when I want to feel energized without reaching for another cup of coffee. I keep a diffuser running on my desk during long work sessions and it genuinely changes the feel of the space. Shop diffusers here. Shop essential oils here.

A Candle That Signals Something

This might sound small, but I am serious about it. I have a ritual of lighting a specific candle when I sit down to write or create. It tells my brain that we are shifting into a particular kind of work. That transition signal matters more than I can fully explain, but if you have ever struggled with the mental shift from household tasks to creative focus, a simple sensory anchor like this can help. A Good Journal: Analog in a Digital World

I keep a journal, and I have for years. Not a perfectly curated gratitude practice with ten prompts and color coding. Just a place to put my thoughts down on paper before they eat me alive. As a business coach, I see a lot of photographers carrying enormous mental loads. The journal is where I process decisions, work through creative blocks, and honestly just dump everything that is competing for space in my brain so I can be present for the actual work. Sound Therapy Bowls

I discovered sound bowls a few years ago and I will admit I was skeptical at first. I am not anymore. The resonance of a singing bowl has a genuinely calming effect on the nervous system, and for someone who runs high-stakes client days and high-energy coaching sessions, having a way to quickly come back to center matters. I use mine before important calls or sessions when I need to transition out of a scattered mental state and into something more focused and grounded. Shop singing bowls here.

Red Light Therapy Panel

This is one I have been using consistently for the past couple of years and the evidence behind red light therapy has grown significantly. I use mine for a few minutes in the morning as part of my routine. The benefits people report include improved mood, reduced inflammation, and better sleep. As someone whose physical energy directly affects my ability to show up as a thoughtful, present business coach, anything that supports my overall wellbeing matters. Shop red light therapy panels here.

Affirmation Cards

I know. Hear me out. I am not someone who relies on toxic positivity or plasters inspirational quotes over genuine business problems. But I am also someone who has watched the internal narrative of a photographer completely determine the trajectory of their business. The stories we tell ourselves about our worth, our talent, and whether we deserve success have a real and measurable impact on what we actually create and charge.

I keep affirmation cards on my desk and I actually use them. Not to bypass hard emotions, but as a reminder that the inner critic who shows up every time I consider raising my prices or putting myself out there is not the truth. Shop affirmation card sets here.

Sustainability Is a Strategy

Inside The Kreate Collective, I teach photographers that mindset is not soft work. It is the foundation everything else is built on. You can have the best systems, the best pricing strategy, and the most beautiful website, but if your inner world is a constant battle, none of those tools will work the way they should.

Taking care of yourself is part of taking care of your business. It always has been. If you are ready to build a photography business that is profitable and sustainable and that you actually enjoy running, that is exactly what we work on together inside the Momentum Method. Come see what we are building.
